Figuring out what you need the computer for is the key starting point for choosing the right computer for your needs. Are you looking for something primarily for gaming or perhaps more suited to browsing the Internet or watching movies? Once you have determined the primary purpose of your new machine, you can better identify which type of device you may require.

Part 1: Choosing the right computer

Do you need a laptop or notebook for portability, or would a desktop device meet your needs better? Desktop computers tend to provide a more powerful option for the home user, offering increased storage capacity, graphics and specific gaming components, however laptops are an increasingly popular choice due to their convenience and portability.

Typically there are four main operating systems to choose from when selecting a computer; Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Chrome OS. Chances are, regardless of your computing level, you’ve already got a good idea of which one will be most suitable for your needs. Windows still remains the most recognised of the operating systems for desktop users, Mac OSX is the preferred platform for creative professionals, Linux is the recommended choice for developers but Chrome OS is the best option for web-based applications. All of the the systems offer compelling benefits so it helps to research each one to see what works best for you.

Does the brand of computer matter? In general, yes! The brand you go with can make a definitive difference in terms of speed, quality, efficiency, durability and overall user experience. Many companies such as Apple, Dell and Asus have established themselves as reliable brands but you may want to consider researching less mainstream options to get the best value for money.

In conclusion, while investing in a new computer might seem like a little overwhelming, when done correctly & taking your own individual needs into consideration it can be an exciting & rewarding process. Your next investment could be the computer that meets all of your present & future computer needs.
